Renovations Without the Runaround

With Harry Handyman you get one team from start to finish — no parade of subcontractors turning up and disappearing, no gaps between trades, and no finger-pointing when something needs putting right. Harry, Sophie and Mark run the job themselves.

We take on everything from single-room refreshes — bathroom, kitchen, living room — up to full-scope projects like loft conversions, garden rooms and extensions where the property suits. Whatever the size, it is managed as one job by one team.

Every renovation is different, so we don't show a menu price. We come out, look at the job properly, and give you a written quote — then a flat rate agreed on approval, so you know the full cost before any work starts.

Renovation FAQs

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

Most standard bathrooms take around 1–2 weeks from strip-out to finish, depending on the tiling, the spec and whether the layout changes. We agree a realistic start and finish date with your written quote.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

A typical kitchen refit runs around 2–3 weeks; larger jobs, or ones that move the plumbing and electrics, take longer. You have a clear schedule agreed up front, not a rough guess.

Can I supply my own materials, fixtures, or fittings?

Yes. Plenty of customers buy their own suite, units or tiles and we fit them. We're happy to supply everything, fit customer-supplied items, or mix the two — just tell us which at the quote stage.

Do I need planning permission for a loft conversion or garden room?

Many loft conversions and garden rooms fall under permitted development, but not all — it depends on size, height and your property. We'll flag anything that needs planning or a lawful-development certificate before we start, and point you to your local authority.

What about party wall agreements?

If the work affects a wall shared with a neighbour, the Party Wall Act may apply. We'll let you know early if your job is likely to need a party wall notice, so there's time to sort it properly.

How do you manage dust and disruption while we're still living in the house?

We sheet up, seal off the work area where we can, and clean down at the end of each day. It's never zero mess on a renovation, but we keep the rest of your home liveable and tidy throughout.

Do we need to move out during the work?

For most single-room jobs, no — people usually stay put. For bigger whole-house projects, or if your only bathroom or kitchen is out of action, we'll talk through the practical options with you before booking in.

How does payment work — deposit, stages, on completion?

For larger jobs we usually take a deposit to cover materials, then agreed stage payments as the work progresses, with the balance on completion once you're happy. It's all set out in the written quote — no surprises.

What does the one-year guarantee cover?

Our workmanship is guaranteed for twelve months. If something we installed isn't right, we come back and put it right. Manufacturer warranties on appliances and fittings run separately, and we'll pass those on to you.

Are you VAT registered?

We're a small owner-run business. If we're VAT registered, VAT is shown clearly on your quote; if we're trading below the current registration threshold, there's no VAT to add. Either way, your written quote is the full price you pay.
