We fix what others replace
Three real jobs from South West Wales — a fridge saved on a bank holiday, a house-clearance radio brought back to life, and a two-day hunt for a fault that wouldn't sit still.
The bank holiday fridge
The call came in over a bank holiday weekend: a fridge-freezer misbehaving. The freezer was still running fine, but the fridge compartment had given up and the light was dead. A quick diagnostic pointed to a faulty part — a straightforward fix on any normal day.
This wasn't a normal day. With the shops shut, the part was three to four days away. In the meantime our customer had all her food — and her medicine — sitting in a fridge that was slowly warming up. That wasn't going to fly.
So we made a plan: order the correct part for the proper repair, and in the meantime find a way to keep her fridge running. Which meant a trip to the local recycling centre, where we'd spotted similar units before. After a good while searching and testing components on the spot, we found three viable candidates — all working.
Back at her place that evening, we fitted and repaired through the night. By morning the light was glowing, the fridge was humming, and her food and medicine were safe — days before the new part even arrived.
Sometimes the best fix isn't the newest part or the fanciest tool. It's looking hard at what's already there and thinking differently.
The house-clearance radio
Some jobs are work; some are a labour of love. This one was both. We picked up a beautiful old radio from a house clearance at the weekend and haven’t been able to put it down since.
The engineering was the easy part, honestly — finding the fault, isolating the circuits, soldering it back to health. The hard part was learning to actually play it: working out the tuning, the volume, and holding the antenna just so to hold a station. What an effort. And we loved every minute.
There's something about bringing a piece of proper old kit back to life that a new gadget never quite matches. Less scrolling, more strolling — with a bit of static and a warm dial glow.
Try something old. It was built to be repaired, and it's still got plenty of life in it.
The flickering TV
The worst faults are the ones that won't show themselves. This TV had an intermittent flicker and would shut itself down — never quite when you were watching for it.
We spent two full days on it: reproducing the fault reliably, then isolating it down to a single board. We'll spare you the technical details — but once the faulty section was found and repaired, that was that.
The result: a happy customer enjoying her television again, instead of shopping for a new one. That's the whole point.
Most repairers would have said 'buy a new one.' Two days of proper fault-finding said otherwise.
